Dragons & Books. That’s All We Needed to Know.

It is always a good day when we get to work on a book cover project, even better when that book involves something that is of interest to us.  We, like a lot of kids, grew up nerdy and as adults, it continues on.

We love the people at Penguin Random House and were happy to collaborate on this award winning series that has been beloved by millions of readers.  For the release of Murtagh, author Christopher Paolini wanted to refresh the titles and lettering, breathing new life into the series.  We, of course, we happy to oblige.

Author Provided Sketches

HOW THE WORK CAME TOGETHER

Author Christopher Paolini provided a handful of sketches that he had roughed out to the art director at Penguin Random House. She, in turn, tagged us in to realize his vision. While we did capture some of his original flare, we took it to new heights, matching the high fantasy vibe of the books. We provided several rough concepts (some of which you can see on this case study) and found a style the author loved. The swashes brought style and consistency to every title in the series.

“Penguin Random House hired us in the beginning of 2023 to update the book titles and Christopher Paolini's name for the new run of his best-seller fantasy novels in his “Inheritance Cycle” series, including a new entry into the series entitled "Murtagh".

It was a pleasure getting to have some of my lettering paired up with the paintings of the extremely talented artist, John Jude Palencar. The effects on the lettering, secondary typography, and layout were done by the in-house team at Penguin Random House.

You can find these in stores and online everywhere now. There are also illustrated editions and special editions floating around with alternate covers.”
